Perched high above Quito’s Plaza Grande, on the roof of the Cathedral, there is a rooster that is not made of flesh, nor stone, nor bronze. It is made of sin remembered.

“El Gallo de La Catedral (The Cathedral Rooster)” is a sinister retelling of one of Quito’s most unsettling legends: an evil spirit that takes the form of a tall, twisted rooster and hunts in the city center at 3:00 a.m.—especially men who drown their guilt in alcohol and contempt.

In this story, the rooster’s body is stretched and unnatural, feathers black with a sickly green and purple shine, like oil on dirty water. Its jagged comb looks torn and burnt; its claws slice cobblestones as if they were soft clay. From the plaza below, it seems like a statue. But when the last bells fade and the drunk, arrogant wanderers stumble out of the taverns, the statue moves.

One of them is a powerful bureaucrat who curses the poor, takes bribes, and treats everyone beneath his class like trash. Staggering across the square, bottle in hand, he doesn’t notice that the rooster has flown down from the Cathedral roof… until the shadow beside him is far too big to be human.

This PDF eBook includes:

  • A complete, fully edited short story of around 4,500 words
  • 8 eerie illustrations plus the cover, showing the Cathedral, the plaza at 3 a.m., and the attack
  • A modern reinterpretation that turns the rooster into a symbol of corruption, arrogance, and social hypocrisy

Perfect for fans of Latin American horror, urban legends with social critique, and nightmarish city spirits, “El Gallo de La Catedral (The Cathedral Rooster)” is part of the Quito’s Urban Legends series, but stands alone as its own terrifying tale.
